Freshwater Trio Concert Series 2008
The inspiration of sound and colour Synaesthesia (from the Greek ‘with-sensation') is a joining together of sensory impressions that are normally experienced separately. The 2008 Concert Series is a kaleidoscopic array of Piano Trio repertoire: popular, established and contemporary. Each concert will explore a tonal centre taken from Scriabin's colour keyboard. Freshwater Trio will also pay homage to another theorist of sound and colour, French composer Olivier Messiaen (in his centenary year), together with specially commissioned transcriptions of Scriabin Preludes by Australian composers. Melba Hall, University of Melbourne, Royal Parade, Parkville. To receive your 2008 brochure with full concert details and booking information please email: Concert 1 – June 17, 7.30pm Key of C = RED Brahms Piano Trio C major Op. 87 Brahms was uncharacteristically proud of his exuberant C major Trio writing, ‘You have not had such a beautiful trio from me'. The strong, bold nature of the key of C is also reflected in the sparkling and flirtatious Mozart C major Trio. Our guest transcriber is Adam Starr, a noted film composer, arranger and jazz guitarist.
Concert 2 - August 12, 7.30pm Key of E = BLUISH WHITE Haydn Piano Trio E minor Hob XV:12 Messiaen's ‘Quartet for the End of Time' is a musical revelation – a work of intense colours, birdsong and a mouthpiece for the Angels of the Apocalypse. For this concert, Freshwater Trio is joined by renowned Australian musician (clarinettist/transcriber), Carl Rosman (MusikFabrik Cologne).
Concert 3 – November 11, 7.30pm Key of B-flat = STEEL GREY Schubert Piano Trio No.1 in Bflat, D.898 Written near the end of a tragically short life, Schubert's momentous B-flat Trio showcases all three musicians at full emotional stretch, alongside Messiaen's choral music masterfully transcribed by regular collaborator Adam Yee. The Australian pianist/conductor Mark Knoop will contribute two Scriabin transcriptions to this concert
